frequently asked questions
Why is it so important?
Lake Atitlán is an endorheic lake, meaning there are no rivers flowing out of it. Hundreds of thousands of people are using its waters to drink, cook and wash. Alarming rates of e.coli are found in the water and are making people sick. Rescuing the lake is a complex problem, the first step towards a regenerative situation is to prevent polluted waters from entering the lake.
What is Amigos Del Lago de Atitlán doing?
Amigos del Lago focuses on generating a regenerative culture in the Lake, so that human beings can coexist in a sustainable and healthy way with the natural environment. We do environmental education, reforestation, recycling, economic empowerment of women, municipal advice on water and sanitation.
Why is the lake getting polluted?
The lake has deteriorated as the population has grown. Many years ago, when the population was much smaller and the practices were different, the lake was balanced. Today, the sewage from homes and businesses that enters the lake without treatment is too much and contributes to its pollution. Landslides and garbage dumps also contribute to worsening the situation
